There is always something interesting about a place that has been left alone to the decay of time. Places that once had such purpose and life now lie in ruins. Old paint slowly chipping away after the years and metal rusting over has always seemed to have a certain depth that I cannot easily describe. It’s a solemn feeling to emerge from the dark basement of an old mental hospital, through an elevator shaft, into the great halls where thousands of patients once walked. The unknown amount of sadness and despair that was then the daily norm for so many patients has almost been locked inside the walls as they too now sit in turmoil. The cruelty of time is never kind to places such as this, but amidst it all, there is beauty to be found in these ruins.
This is what we have tried to capture in our series we’ve called The Abandoned. There are no words to accurately describe the soul of each place without truly experiencing them for yourself, and while I don’t believe these films can do total justice, I hope they will give you a glimpse of the beautiful ruins we’ve found.
